Short answer: For a custom glass wall art print, your photo needs at least 150 pixels per inch (PPI) of finished panel size, and 250–300 PPI for panels under 16 inches. A 20×30" glass print needs a minimum of 3000×4500 pixels. Glass is a high-gloss surface, so it reveals softness, noise and compression artifacts that canvas would hide — the sharper the original file, the better the result.
Most people choose their photo emotionally and worry about the technical side afterwards. That's the right order — but glass is the one print surface where the technical side can quietly ruin a great image.
Canvas has a woven texture that absorbs minor softness. Paper sits matte behind a mat board. Glass does neither. The UV ink is bonded to a polished, reflective surface, which means every pixel edge, every bit of sensor noise and every over-compressed sky gets amplified rather than softened.
The good news: almost any photo taken on a modern phone is already good enough for a mid-size panel. You just need to know how to check. This guide walks through it in five steps.
Step 1: Find out how many pixels your photo actually has
Not file size in MB — pixel dimensions. A 2 MB file can be 4000 pixels wide or 900 pixels wide. Only the pixel count matters.
On iPhone
Open the photo in Photos, swipe up (or tap the ⓘ icon). You'll see something like 12 MP · 3024 × 4032. Those last two numbers are what you need.
On Android
Open the photo in Google Photos, tap the three-dot menu or swipe up for details. Resolution is listed under the file name.
On Windows
Right-click the file → Properties → Details tab → look for "Dimensions."
On Mac
Right-click → Get Info, or open in Preview and press ⌘I. Dimensions appear under "Image Size."
Step 2: Match your pixels to your panel size
Here's the practical chart. Minimum is the point below which softness becomes visible on glass. Recommended is where the print looks flawless even up close.

Why 150 PPI is acceptable on large panels: viewing distance scales with size. Nobody stands 12 inches from a 40×60" piece — you take it in from across the room, where the eye can't resolve individual dots. On a 5×5" panel held at arm's length, the same 150 PPI would look soft. The smaller the piece, the higher the PPI requirement.
The quick formula
If your size isn't in the chart:
Panel dimension in inches × 150 = minimum pixels needed on that side.

Step 3: Know which photos glass loves — and which it punishes
Resolution isn't the only variable. Some image types thrive on a glossy, dimensional surface; others expose their weaknesses on it.
Images that look exceptional on glass
- Saturated color and strong contrast — the glass surface refracts light slightly, which deepens color and adds visible dimension.
- Landscapes, coastlines, aerials, city skylines — wide tonal range, no critical fine texture, and they read beautifully at scale.
- Abstract, marble, fluid art and geometric designs — gloss enhances the sense of depth these patterns rely on.
- High-key black and white — glass gives monochrome a dramatic, gallery-grade weight.
- Anything with water, metal or reflective surfaces — the medium mirrors the subject and the effect compounds.
Images that need extra care
- Low-light and night phone shots — sensor noise that's invisible on screen becomes grain on a large glossy panel. Check at 100% zoom before uploading.
- Portraits with smooth skin — there's no surface texture to hide noise or heavy beauty-filter smoothing.
- Shallow depth-of-field / bokeh backgrounds — blur needs real resolution behind it, not an upscaled approximation.
- Very dark, low-contrast images — a gloss finish is reflective, so deep shadow areas can behave like a mirror in a bright room. Consider where the piece will hang relative to windows and lights.
- Fine text or thin line work — high-contrast edges show pixel stepping first. These need 250–300 PPI regardless of size.
Step 4: Crop deliberately — don't let the panel crop for you
Your photo has an aspect ratio. So does your panel. If they don't match, something has to give.

Three crop rules for glass
- Leave breathing room at the edges. Keep faces, horizons and key subjects at least 5% away from the panel border. On a frameless glass piece the edge is a hard, polished line — anything touching it feels cut off rather than framed.
- Crop before you upload, not after. If you crop it yourself you control what's lost. If you let the system fit it, the decision gets made for you.
- Re-check resolution after cropping. Cropping removes pixels. A 4032-pixel-wide photo cropped to 60% is now 2419 pixels wide — which drops it from a 26" maximum to a 16" maximum.
Step 5: Avoid the five files that always disappoint
These account for the large majority of image problems we see on custom orders.
1. Photos sent through WhatsApp, Messenger or iMessage
Messaging apps compress images aggressively — often down to 1600 pixels or less. Always go back to the original file on the camera roll or the original device. If a family member sent you the photo, ask them to send it again as a "document" or "actual size" attachment, or via AirDrop or a cloud link.
2. Screenshots
A screenshot captures your screen's resolution, not the image's. A screenshot of a 4000-pixel photo on a phone gives you roughly a 1200-pixel file. Save the original instead.
3. Images saved from Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest
Social platforms re-encode uploads and strip resolution. What you download is a display copy, not a print file.
4. Images pulled from a Google image search
Web images are typically 72 PPI and sized for screens. They're also almost always copyrighted — we can't print an image you don't have the rights to use.
5. Aggressively AI-upscaled files
Upscaling can rescue a borderline image, but it invents detail rather than recovering it. On a matte surface the invented texture blends in. On gloss, over-upscaled skin, hair and foliage take on a waxy, plastic look. Use upscaling to close a small gap — not to turn a 1000-pixel file into a 40-inch panel.
Borderline file? Your best options, in order: (1) find a higher-resolution original, (2) choose a smaller panel size, (3) crop tighter into the sharpest part of the image and print that as a smaller piece. All three beat printing a soft file large.
Color: what changes between your screen and the glass
Two things shift when a photo moves from a backlit screen to a UV-printed panel.
Screens emit light; prints reflect it. Bright highlights that glow on your phone will read as paper-white on the panel. Glass compensates better than any other surface here — the refractive gloss gives it a luminous quality closer to a screen than canvas ever gets — but it's still reflected light.
Deep blacks gain depth. UV ink on glass holds shadow detail unusually well, so dark images that would turn muddy on canvas often print with real separation. This is one of the medium's genuine advantages, and one of the main reasons people move from canvas to glass.
Practical guidance: don't over-edit in anticipation. Don't crank saturation or brightness "to compensate" — glass already amplifies both. Send the file as you like it on a standard-brightness screen and let the medium do its work.

Requiring 300 DPI on a 40×60" panel would mean a 12000×18000 pixel file, which almost no consumer camera produces.
What file format should I upload?
JPEG at maximum quality is fine and is what most people have. PNG and TIFF are also accepted and preserve slightly more data. Avoid re-saving a JPEG repeatedly — each save discards more information.
My photo is a bit blurry. Can it be fixed?
Blur from camera shake or missed focus cannot be recovered — sharpening only exaggerates it. Slight softness from a lower-resolution file can sometimes be improved with careful upscaling. The most reliable fix is to print at a smaller size, where the same pixel count delivers a higher effective PPI.
Does a black and white photo work on glass?
Very well. The gloss surface and the depth of UV-printed blacks give monochrome images a dramatic, gallery-like presence. Just make sure the file is clean — noise is more visible in monochrome because there's no color information to distract the eye.
What happens if my photo doesn't match the panel's aspect ratio?
Part of the image gets cropped to fit. Crop it yourself before uploading so you control what's kept, then re-check the pixel dimensions, since cropping reduces resolution.
Can I send a photo my relative texted me?
You can, but messaging apps compress images heavily — often to 1600 pixels or less, which limits you to small panels. Ask them to resend the original via email, AirDrop or a cloud link instead.
